Appearance: Ulysses is tall and commanding, he stands at 6,3. He has pale, almost vampiric looking skin. He has rather sunken, dark blue eyes, and dirty fair hair. His facial bones are rather prominant, and he looks drawn regardless of how well he eats. He is very particular in his manners, and so wears very neat and ordered clothing. He hates disarray in his appearance and is always clean shaven. He wears dark coloured clothing, and favours his right hand for wand work.
History: The parents of Uylesses Westernra had come to America, when they were just married, hoping to partake of the American dream in the new world. They lived happily in Independence for several years, before a group decided to move further out west, where the living was meant to be better and wealth could be acquired easily.
He was 9 when they set out from their little township as part of a wagon train. The family hoped they could forge a life for themselves out west where the weather was good, and land was plentiful– the epitome of manifest destiny. They reached the Truckee Lake as October rolled around and the entire party became stuck in the mountains with spent cattle, little food and few provisions. Things became progressively worse as the party was stuck there for some time.
More and more of them succumbed to malnutrition and starvation, and in order to maintain the lives of those still physically able, or the young – the families resorted to cooking and eating the flesh of those who had fallen. It was a terrible time for everyone – except perhaps for young Uylesses. The hunger in his belly was voracious, wolf like, clawing and biting, and when the first mouth of warm stew, made from Garret Moran, the fallen father of one of his closest friends it was like angels were singing in his head. It made him feel full and warm for the first time in months. They continued with this pattern of living for the rest of the winter
It was not until February that the family were saved by men from the garrison stationed on the far side of the high pass. The brought blankets, food, horses, and safe passage through the mountains for the beleaguered travellers. Both Westernra parent’s had died, and been duely consumed by the group of survivors, as had 4 of his siblings and his new brother in law, only Ulysses and his sister Elsa survived the harsh climate.
Only 4 children and 4 adults survived the harsh conditions of the pass, out of 45 who had set out from Independence, 5 had died long before the party turned to their monstrous survival method, and the rest had been duely consumed to prolonge the lives of those who remained. The rescuers noted the mental instability of the adults, all of whom ended their lives in an asylum, with the exception of 1 who took his own life shortly after returning to ‘civil’ society unable to live with what he had done to survive. It was decided that the children should be sent as far away from California as they could be sent in order to wipe clean their pasts and try to forget the terrible things done to save their lives. Elsa and Ulysses were sent to live with an elderly aunt in England, their mothers oldest sister, a spinster who lived a frugal life and served only the meanest of meals.
A few months after moving into his aunts home, a strange man appeared at the door, and explained that he was a wizard and Ulysses would be going to a special school so he could learn to harness his gifts. His aunt was pleased to be rid of him for so much of the year that she consented to his leaving without hesitation. Elsa was soon after sent to a girls school in London to be educated.
Ulysses entered Hogwarts and was sorted into slytherin house, where he found it difficult to adjust to life that was not as harsh and hard as he had out in the west, and indeed not as hard as life has been on the mountain pass. Despite the plentiful, and delicious food, he found himself craving the taste of the stew made from the Moran patriarch. He tried everything he could to get his food to taste the way that that stew did, but no food ever came close.
He completed his OWLs and his NEWTs, and joined St. Mungo's hospital as in intern. It was one day as an intern, he had been takin samples of a recently deceased person when the thought occurred to him to take an additional small portion, no more than a medallions worth ‘for his own use’ – no one would ever notice and he might once again experience that delicious feeling that had so marked his childhood. He snuck the sample home, cooked it gently with onions and carrots, and ate it slowly, relishing the flavour, it was everything he remembered.
Thus began his habit of taking ‘samples’ home with him, he was careful and no one ever noticed, and if they did he just claimed he had messed up the first sample and had been required to take another. He came to realise that the fresher the body, the better the taste – different to other meats which required aging to taste satisfying.
In time he became a Healer and worked diligently in his role. He is a good doctor, after all he knows the human body better than most- intimately one might say. working his way up to healer in charge there. He seldom saw his sister, by her choice, he reminded her too much of those dark times by the lake, but she grew up happy and healthy, married and had several children, 5 boys and 2 girls. He see’s his sister infrequently, usually for a day or so around Christmas.
When his nephew turned 10 he received a frantic letter from his sister explaining that her son was ‘like him’ and would be attending the school that he had gone to, and would he be amenable to her coming to live with him, as her husband had reacted badly to the news and he would be happier living within this new magical world. A few years later his niece was revealed to also be a wizard and he now lives with his uncle when not at school as well. He has, on occasion given them both a taste of his favourite dishes, but they have no idea what it is, and he usually limits the frequency with which he ‘indulges’ during the summer months. He doesn’t want his niece and nephew to be like him, but he knows that randomly refusing the let them taste will bring about suspicion that simply letting them take a bite.
He has been the Hospital Director of St. Mungo's for 2 years now. After all it is such a big hospital, with so many bodies passing through it’s morgue and so more opportunity to ‘avail himself’ of his favourite delicacy with less chance of detection, and after all no one questions the man in charge.
