Did you know?
The Language of the Flowers was a popular method to express feelings where words might be improper, but did you know other means of doing so? Some ladies used their parasols, as well as their fans, gloves, and hankies to flirt with a gentleman (or alternatively, tell them to shove it!). — Bree ( Submit your own)

October 18, 2018 - Hogsmeade, Slums

Dusk had fallen around the forest, the hues of the sun painting the trees at the edges in purples and dark reds to match the leaves that had begun to turn and fall. Standing among them Galina’s dark red gown almost blended in as she took in the scene. It was her favorite time of day, when the last caress of the sun could blossom on her skin without repercussion, the shadows already deep enough to protect her. She missed the sun, perhaps her partiality for dusk had begun from her deep desire to see the sun again, if even for a few lingering moments - mere seconds in her long life.

She had just returned from her hunt beyond these parts, having ventured further north into Scotland with Mari, before turning back. Mari had decided to rejoin her in a few weeks, but Galina had suspected that Mari might need longer than that before she came back. She would come back, Galina had never doubted that with her sister. Despite the absence of the other vampire Galina was glad to be back home. For this was as close to a home she had had in well over a century.

She looked out at the houses beyond the edge of the woods, the slums hummed with human activity as the sky deepened to almost the dark of night. Mari took a step forward, a walk outside of the forest would do her wandering thoughts well, she decided, tugging her black cloak up around her face as if she needed the warmth such a hood might bring to a human. Instead it cast her in shadow, her pale features and fangs hiding in the way she had long ago learned. The streets were slowly clearing of people as families began their suppers. Galina glanced in the windows she passed wondering about their lives. There would have been a time when she would have lifted her nose in the air at the lives they lived, at the quality of their clothes and belongings, but those days had been so very long ago. She had lived in much worse conditions since then, even now she did. Living in caverns instead of having a roof over her head.

The vampire was so immersed in her thoughts that she hardly noticed when she tripped over something - someone. Galina caught herself before she went tumbling forward, but her eyes widened in surprise. “Oh! My apologies. ” Galina began to move forward, not intending to say and speak of this.

Coleman had all but vanished.. again. The damned idiot brother of Ray's was always vanishing but sometimes he was gone too long. And during such times, Ray always took it upon himself to try and find the errant brother. Last he'd known, he'd wandered off to Hogsmeade again. He had to do some asking around before finding that he'd last been seen in the slums of the town and so had trekked to the less than savory side of town.

It didn't take Ray long to get lost in the ramshackle houses in search of his brother. Most were less than polite when asked any questions and others simply ignored him. It was getting frustrating, annoying even. He continued on though, knowing Coleman had to be found before he ended up dead. Which, still could happen once Ray finally got his hands on his brother. The cold weather and rude people weren't helping his mood any.

He'd just stooped to pick up a sickle on the ground when he was all but collided with and he heard a feminine voice shouting apologizes. "Excuse me," he called out before she could get too far away, not really caring that she'd tripped over him but if she had the manners to apologize maybe she'd answer his question, "Have you seen a gentleman about? Little shorter than me. Curly brown hair. Probably acting a bit odd?"

A cool breeze brushed against Galina as she made her way from the incident, swirling her cloak around the red skirts as if blood pulled from a wound she had made in a victim's neck. Halfway down the street Galina stopped at the sound of the gentleman calling back to her. Of course he would, she thought with a bitter tug at her thoughts. She should have been more careful in the first place, she knew better. If she were to blend into the shadows tripping of humans in a magical town didn’t exactly lend itself to the stealth she had accustomed her life to. With an imperceptible sigh Galina turned around to face the gentleman once again standing in the street.

As she approached a few steps closer to him, hesitant to get too close, in case he was upset with her lack of manners, the gentleman spoke. His question surprised her. Galina considered it for a moment. The gentleman before her was tall and stocky. Brown hair was combed half fashionably back and a hint of stubble graced his chin. He looked rather like many she had seen before. Hardly anything to help him stand out in a crowd. The fact that he was looking for someone just like him almost made her laugh. A man a few inches shorter but much the same? It was like looking for a blade of grass slightly shorter than the rest in a field. The only real noticeable difference that the gentleman mentioned was curly hair and the way he was acting. Was he perhaps looking for someone coming home from a night at a pub or was he instead looking for someone who wasn’t quite right in the head?

As if the gentleman he was looking for might be around them she looked up and down the street. Cloaked individuals hurried against the increasing wind to their homes, huddling deep in their layers as if that might protect them from the weather, ready to be out of the cold as the final stains of red sunk from the sky turning it to an inky black. The light had been dim enough to human eyes before, now Galina doubted the gentleman would only be able to see from the small glowing lights that doted from the windows and lampposts. Her eyes, however, were sharper, more apt to the dark and the lighting. She could still make out the shapes of the buildings, the corners and alleys, almost better than she might have with the glare of the sunlight tauntingly in her eyes.

I don’t believe I have, sir.” Galina told him, trying to return his lack of fight with a proper answer. Then, because she really didn’t have any plans for the evening, she added, “Was this around where you saw him last?” It wasn’t what she had planned for her walk, but perhaps it was something to idle the time away. Besides, what might happen if she helped? They perhaps might actually find the man. Right now it didn't seem as if this particular gentleman's chances were very good, what with it getting dark and him asking a perfect stranger who had pretty much tried over him for help. Really she doubted without assistance he might never find who he was looking for. “I could help you look, if you’d like?” Galina made sure to put the words forth tentatively as she looked at the gentleman, as if she thought the idea might be a bad one but as if she hated to see someone in need of help and the ideas clashed in her. Truthfully she simply had nothing better to do. And if she became in danger she was perfectly capable of slipping away before the gentleman knew what had happened.

Ray watched as she cast her own gaze along the streets after finally stopping to hear him out. He couldn't really blame her for not stopping initially. Most in the slums were awful people. Rude and uncaring. He could have very well lashed out at her for trodding over him but he had more pressing concerns to deal with. Not to mention he wasn't exactly the type to harm a woman in any way. He may have been a bit rough around the edges and not the type of gentleman one brought home to the family but he was far from being well and truly awful.

She was asking a rather loaded question though, inquiring whether that was the last place he'd seen his brother. Truthfully, the last time he'd seen Coleman was likely more than a few days prior. And even then, he'd seen him in their own loft in London. The aloof brother of his could very well be anywhere. Perhaps even holed up in the rich bitch's house in Hogsmeade. He hoped Coleman had gotten out of that situation, or at least gotten it out of his system enough to where he was no longer going there. Rich people were a hazard. Especially when one was fucking a married one.

Shrugging, he looked back in the direction of the woman. "Cole tends to be quite the wanderer," he answered, not really sure how else to describe his younger brother, "I just know this is one of his usual stomping grounds." And that was perhaps putting it a bit lightly. Everywhere was Cole's stomping grounds, especially if it meant selling whatever it was he could get his hands on. He doubted most in the slums could truly afford what Cole pandered about but the other man wasn't opposed to other sorts of transactions.

"I'd appreciate the help though," he added, offering a small sort of smile. It was the best a rather stoic and simply gruff man could offer. "That is, so long as I'm not keeping you from something."

Galina understood wanderers. She was one herself. But if there was one thing she understood about it, it was that often they didn’t want to be found. This man was, in her opinion, on a hopeless mission. But she nodded as if she were not the least bit perturbed by this fact. “I’m sure he’ll turn up soon then.” The lie slid smoothly from her lips.

No, nothing pressing at the moment.” Galina told him with a nonchalant shrug, leaving room open to create an excuse when she tired of this activity.

Where have you tried looking so far?” Perhaps if they could actually create a plan they might actually find this brother.

Ray nodded with a bit of a shrug. Cole did always turn up eventually but sometimes they had to go looking for him either way. And, with that being his only night off, it was his only chance to go looking for him. He he didn't find his brother that night, he'd simply brush it off and expect him to turn up in a day or two.

"Not many places yet," he answered honestly, "I just got here to the area so my search was just starting." At least, there in the slums it was. He'd already gone through the main areas of High Street he may have been and even checked Diagon Alley as well as a wide variety of areas in London.

"I figured I'd just look along a few of the alleyways here and see if he's loitering about," he added. They could easily remain on the main roads of the slums, especially if she wasn't all that keen traipsing about with a strange man.

Of course he hadn’t searched much. She should have guessed by now. And the plan he laid out was ludicrous. Look down a few alleyways? Truly it would be a miracle if he found this man he sought. “If we split up and each look down the alleys on both sides of this street and continue from there, perhaps that might help.” Galina suggested, making sure her tone wavered just enough for a modern woman’s concerns of looking into an alleyway. In her opinion they had very good reason to be wary of such places, and not just because creatures like herself lingered in them.

Ray gave a slight nod, agreeing to the idea. Two pairs of eyes were better than just the one, after all. Though, he didn't have high hopes of finding his brother. He had to at least give it a go. "That sounds ideal," he said as he began to move toward the other side of the street, "I'm not even sure if he's here but I suppose it doesn't hurt to look."

Wonderful, Galina couldn’t help but think grimly at the man’s admission, the gentleman in question might not even be here. It was a like looking for a needle in a basket of string when the needle might have fallen in the grass instead. “And where else might he be?” She asked as if nonplussed by the comment, her tone light and inquiring as she peered down an alley. Nothing there, she moved on to the next one.
