Did you know?

The Language of the Flowers was a popular method to express feelings where words might be improper, but did you know other means of doing so? Some ladies used their parasols, as well as their fans, gloves, and hankies to flirt with a gentleman (or alternatively, tell them to shove it!). — Bree

WANTED:

Ester Montgomery for Thomas Montgomery. The one that got away (with the pornographer...)
This boy, then. He wasn't new. Wasn't one of the worst people in the common room, those rotten rich boys - like Mr. Jailkeeper - who could not fathom a world beyond their own farts. Was a good working class lad, so he'd heard. Had a bit of a weird looking face, and a bit of a weird thing for preaching. Still.

September 2nd, 1888 - Hogwarts, Great Hall

It was weird, almost surreal, being back at Hogwarts. Somersby had looked forward to it all summer, and yet... after the venture into Irvingly he almost felt as if Hogwarts were too safe for him. Like someone had placed training wheels (or the Victorian equivalent) on him and sent him back to study somewhere he couldn't be harmed. The venture itself had shown him that he really did need to come back, it was driving him to get back in the classroom and start learning again, but part of his mind felt this could be done out in the real world too.

Somersby was lost in his thoughts as he made his way down to supper. Classes would start tomorrow and it almost seemed to him it would be better than just lingering around the castle. Although, he'd admit it was good to catch up with his housemates.

He had almost made it to the Great Hall when a young girl, likely a third year and certainly not a Ravenclaw, almost ran into him. She looked up to him with her big eyes and a giant smile. "Hi Mr. Fudge, I wanted you to have this." With that the girl thrust a card into his hand and scurried off before he could really question it, leaving him staring after her before remembering the card in his hand. He'd look at it later he determined as he started to walk - only to walk right into someone. Merlin's beard he hoped they hadn't seen that exchange - whatever it was.

Being back at Hogwarts with what had gone down over the summer with Leah was... odd. Things felt different somehow, like she'd come back and all of the furniture had been shifted an inch to the left. It could have been the fact that she was now the Quidditch Captain and had the Beater position she'd been coveting for years. It could have also been the fact that she'd realized the reason why she was so terrified of marriage - she was attracted to women.

"Oh!" She exclaimed as someone bodily bumped into her. Typically it took a bit to ruffle her since she was taller than the majority of Hogwarts' student population, but this someone was just as tall as she. She withdrew from her thoughts to recognize her friend Holliday's brother.

"Mr. Fudge, I apologize - I didn't see you there. How was your summer? Er.. silly question. I know quite a bit about how it went. I was at the Sanditon for most of it, with your sister. She was quite a mess when that Witch Weekly article came out about how you were destined to die. I'm so relieved that you've made it back safe and sound," Pru prattled cheerfully.

The student in question was none other than Holliday’s friend Miss Browne. Somersby didn’t know her terribly well, but she seemed a kind enough girl - if talkative. “It’s quite alright” He started but she didn’t let him get a word in edgewise.

Finally she took a breathe so he could answer her. “I’m glad to have made it back safe and sound as well.” Somersby chuckled with a shrug, wondering if Ben were getting quite this much attention. “Although I admit it made for rather an interesting summer. How was your time at Sanditon?” Perhaps she’d continue to prattle on and not even note what had transpired before he ran into her - if she had even noticed at all in the first place.

"Rather uneventful," She admitted though felt her cheeks heat nonetheless, "Though I suppose given the way of things, that's a good thing. Either way, I'm glad to be back at Hogwarts. There was a time there where I was worried we wouldn't be able to come back. What's the point of a magical school when there's no magic, you know? Anyway," She waved her hand, like batting the worry away as if it were an annoying insect, "There's no sense worrying about it now - clearly everything is just fine."

There were plenty of other things to be worried about that had yet to happen, but she wasn't one to focus on the past - nor the future - so much as the present.

Pru glanced down at his fist, a bit of the parchment poking out to reminder her of what she'd seen just a moment before, "It looks like you've got a bit of a following from your adventures?"

Miss Browne always had a rather verbose way of speaking, finishing a thought and conversation all in one breathe before brushing it off. But it was nice in a way, Somersby didn’t have to worry about holding up his end of the conversation, he could simply nod and smile in the appropriate places and not need to worry about it. “I’m certainly glad to be back as well.” He interjected with an apologetic smile, always feeling bad about adding thoughts when others were speaking.

Just when Somersby thought he might be able to slip away unnoticed, the whole incident to be forgotten, Miss Browne noticed it. Bloody hell.Er, yes.” Somersby began awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck with his spare hand feeling the heat returning to the back of his neck. . “It appears so. Although, I can’t really fathom why.” He shrugged.

His embarrassment was evident, but that didn't stop her from finding it amusing. She was much more likely to get a howler than fanmail. Was it living vicariously through her classmate? Possibly. Was it the most entertaining thing she'd come across today? Most definitely.

She grinned and motioned eagerly toward the note, "Well, open it and find out!" Pru remained where she was - leaning in just a tad - as her curiosity peaked. She was going to find out what was in that note and then she'd go and tell Leah and Holliday. She wasn't about to run off and miss out on this fun!

Somersby didn’t necessarily trust that Miss Browne would keep quiet about the note. In fact he rather felt it was about to be the news of the school, or at least of her friends’. Something that he wasn’t too keen on. He wasn’t one much for being talked about and he was fairly sure the young lady who’s note was in question likely wasn’t either. Besides, it wasn’t an entirely gentlemanly thing to go around showing a lady’s note to everyone. “I’m not sure that would be a wise decision.” He told Miss Browne as politely as he could, sticking the letter in the pocket of his robes.

His response hadn't been what she had expected. Immediately offended, she crossed her arms over her chest and quirked a defiant brow, "Why is that?"

"I rather expect that the young lady did not mean it for an audience." Somersby explained, feeling bad for the girl, although really she had been the one who had handed him a note with no further conversation.
