Did you know?

First names were most often used by childhood or school friends. If the friendship was made after school age, first names would only really be used by women. Men were far more likely to refer to their friends by their surnames, a mark of familiarity. — Documentation

Emilia Wright for Jude Wright. Casually alienating offspring since 18882.
Separating was also not a great idea, though they weren't doing great at staying together anyway. If she were to volunteer to be the human sacrifice.. well... Hogsmeade had plenty of debutantes anyway...

Cross Your Fingers
September 02nd, 1888 — Hogwarts Library
Claire Bénet

Flora had decided she did not like Claire Bénet from the moment her name had appeared in the Daily Prophet, and Hogwarts had only solidified that disliking. The girl came from a good family, but she and that twin of hers - everyone knew that twins were unlucky - managed to inherit an inclination towards trouble-making. On top of that, Claire Bénet was a Gryffindor - and you know who else was a Gryffindor? Paxton Fudge.

That was the final straw. She'd fought with Paxton Fudge the last time she spoke to him, but deep down inside she still liked him, and the thought of him becoming friendly with the girl made her irrationally angry. She thought he'd be better off befriending Carius Bulstrode, who at least had the decency not to make a public spectacle of himself.

Seeing Miss Bénet in the library that afternoon, Flora deliberated on whether or not to approach her. She was leaning towards no because, well, it wasn't really her business to interject herself into blooming friendships despite her disapproval. On the other hand, it wasn't as if Miss Bénet knew of her feelings - and she'd have to meet her in-person at some point! (Though, she soon would come to realize, hiding her disdain was easier said than done.)

"You're Miss Claire Bénet, aren't you?" she asked, approaching the table where the girl sat. Of course she was Claire Bénet; there were no other wealthy redheads beginning Hogwarts that year, and Merlin was her hair even redder up close! "You're in Gryffindor with Mr. Fudge," she said, eyes scanning the girl's outfit for the holes and dirt she just assumed would be there "...and Mr. Bulstrode," she added as somewhat of an afterthought.

Gryffindor. As good of a house as any, in Claire's opinion. She hadn't even known what house she had wanted to be in. Though she certainly had wanted to be sorted with her sister. And her wish had been granted. Cele was in Gryffindor along side her and it was wonderful. Soon they would plan pranks in the common room and have fun around Hogwarts. Exploring would be far more easier when they didn't have to meet outside of different common rooms before heading off for adventure!

Mr. Bulstrode had also been sorted into Gryffindor, which had surprised the young red head. Mama had said that his family was more commonly from the Slytherin house. Well, she guessed that he was now getting his own taste of a bit of adventure. Perhaps his views might change a bit from their last conversation.

Claire also remembered another young man from that resort she had visited with her family. He had been sorted as a Gryffindor as well. How interesting. And that nice lady was a prefect of their house! That was quite exciting. She would be sure to spend the year getting to know the nice lady better. But for some reason, Claire had thought she had been out of school already. Had the nice lady even said if she was still in school? Possibly. It had been a while since their first and second meeting with one another.

Now was a time for focusing on her class work. If one was to succeed on a quest, one must be well educated. Or she might end up just as Mr. Bulstrode had thought, dead. How terrible! Why would anyone even bring that up in what had once been an exciting conversation? Oh well, perhaps now they could move on despite their difference in views.

Working on her homework for charms class, she couldn't help but feel as if she was being watched. To be honest, Claire didn't really know Flora Mulciber. At least not very well. That said, it meant she didn't really recognize the young lady that had just walked up to her. Looking up as she was being spoken to, she was slightly surprised that she was recognized and not mistaken for her twin.

Mama had been very stern about the conditions of her school robes before she was off to Hogwarts. Having not even touched the robes since she had been sized for them, she was had not even had time to run around in them. That said, it was slightly surprising when she was looked up and down as if something was wrong with her. "I am Miss Claire, and I am in Gryffindor... along with Mr. Fudge and Mr. Bulstrode." She responded, slightly confused as to why she was being questioned about the two young men being in her house.

Being emotional (which, in Flora's mind, was a synonym for 'irrational') in that moment, Flora let out a breath of disappointment. She was partially expecting that Miss Bénet would speak too loud (this was the library) - or better yet, blow up and get in her face as if she just knew why Flora was there to begin with.

She did not.

Crossing her arms over her chest, clearly agitated by the Gryffindor's calmness, Flora stared down at her for one long, anticipatory moment. "Good," she said suddenly, unsure of where to go from here. Sure, there were obvious conversational paths - "do you know Arabella Wood?" or perhaps, "have you acquainted yourself with your house-mates yet?" - but none of them would do anything to make Flora feel better.

(Flora did not want to feel better. She wanted to feel angry. She wanted a reason to hate Claire Bénet for the chaperon-escaping, trouble-making girl all of society gossip made her out to be! Unfortunately, for as blunt as she could be with people she knew, the same did not extend to strangers she was trying to get a one-up over. She could huff and puff all she wanted, but Flora was friendly - and she very much wanted people to like her!)

"Well then," she said haughtily, as if she was personally affronted (which she was) by the response. "Do you plan on trying out for quidditch?" Ha! That would prove what a poor influence she was! "I heard both of them might." (She really hadn't, but it seemed like something both Mr. Bulstrode and Mr. Fudge might do.)

Just from watching the ever changing expressions on the other girl’s face, Claire became all the more confused. Did she know her? Had Claire played a prank on this girl and had just forgotten? It was always a goal of Claire to try to make the prank fun for anyone, so she couldn’t even see how that would bother this girl. Perhaps Cele did something? But Cele was less social than her, what could she have possibly done?

'Good'? Well she supposed it could be good. "I suppose it is good, everyone is interesting to get to know. But I’m sure that is true in all of the houses." She responded. One person she reallsy wished to get to know more was the nice seventh year that she had met in Hogsmeade! Claire wasn’t really surprised that the lady was a prefect, she was quite nice. "You were sorted into… Slytherin, right? Is that nice? I’m sure there are plenty of interesting people there." She added, slight wonder in her tone. All of the houses were interesting to her, why only focus on one?

The girl’s tone throughout the sudden conversation was all too confusing for the young Gryffindor. Perhaps she was shy, and had a hard time making friends? One would certainly be flustered by that. At quidditch, she scrunched her nose softly. "No, I’m not a big fan of quidditch." She responded. The rules were weird, and everyone flew too fast to simply watch. And… she might just get sick flying that fast. Even if she liked adventure, that did not mean she liked everything having to do with danger.
