Did you know?
The Language of the Flowers was a popular method to express feelings where words might be improper, but did you know other means of doing so? Some ladies used their parasols, as well as their fans, gloves, and hankies to flirt with a gentleman (or alternatively, tell them to shove it!). — Bree ( Submit your own)

When your mum thinks you're gay for your best friend (but you probably are)
This boy, then. He wasn't new. Wasn't one of the worst people in the common room, those rotten rich boys - like Mr. Jailkeeper - who could not fathom a world beyond their own farts. Was a good working class lad, so he'd heard. Had a bit of a weird looking face, and a bit of a weird thing for preaching. Still.Aubrey Davis in The Under-Sofa

Summer Outings

August 9th, 1888 - Padmore Park @ This
@Sloane Bixby

The day the fog lifted and father's owl had reached them mother had packed them up and whisked them back home. Despite the loveliness of Sanditon Resort, Sisse was more than happy to be home. Even happier to finally be able to see her friends again. Understandably with the fog gone it was busy in Hogsmeade and so the outing took almost a week to plan. But the Carnival was opening and presented the perfect opportunity. Miss Hughes bad brought the three Thompsett children but the boys had soon run off on their own while Sisse kept her eyes peeled for her best friend.

Standing by the entrance to the carnival Sisse kept close to Miss Hughes until she finally spotted Sloane's slight figure in the crowd. "Sloane!" She called enthusiastically over the crowd waving at her friend until finally Sloane spotted her. She grinned until her friend reached her and then threw her arms around her in a hug. "It's so good to see you!"

Sloane had been practically vibrating with excitement when she and Alvin had set off for the carnival so she could meet up with Sisse. Her brother was a little less enthusiastic, but he had plans to meet friends, so Sloane highly suspected that he wasn't as nonchalant about the whole thing as he appeared. Their approach to the entrance had Sloane nearly jumping to see if she could find her friend, but even with her added height (a whole one and half inches her mum had said!) she still couldn't see through the crowd. Alvin on the the other hand had little problems finding Sisse and her chaperon and so steered Sloane in the right direction with a not-so-gentle nudge.

"Sisse!" Sloane all but squealed, approaching her friend at a breakneck speed. "I'm so glad you're home, I've missed you!" Rufus was home, Sisse was home, everybody was where they were supposed to be and there was no more dreaded fog! Hogwarts was even coming up soon and though it wasn't quite the same as the anticipation of first year, she was thrilled to be going back. She had every intention of making the house team this year if it killed her!

I missed you too! It felt like I’d never come back.” Sisse was so excited to be home. She had missed her friends terribly, something not even a beach vacation could dull. “But I’m back now and school is just around the corner! It’ll be back to normal before we even know it.” And Sisse couldn’t wait. She was tired of her brothers and tired of the rules of home. She had missed the excitement of Sloane and her wild ideas.

What shall we do first?” Sisse looked at the carnival with wonder. She had almost lost hope that she’d even be able to see it before the school year started. There were so many things to do and see she couldn’t even pick where to start.

School was not exciting because she was good at it or really enjoyed the academic aspect, but because of quidditch and Sloane was not soon to forget it. "Ah school you're right, I've lost so much practice time because of that silly fog!" Sloane was Dismayed by that, despite Cameron's assurances that he would help her with some last minute tips when school did start up again.

"Let's find a game to play!" Her mum had given her some pocket change to get a treat and play a couple of games while she and Sisse wandered. She was really looking forward to something sweet at some point today. There had to be some delicious treats somewhere. That could wait though, certainly there had to be a game they would have some luck with! This was a lovely way to get to spend some time with her friend before school started. Of course then they'd spend all the time together, but they'd gone for so long without seeing one another!

Quidditch wasn’t Sisse’s thing per say, it was definitely Sloane’s thing, but Sisse didn’t mind. She enjoyed the conversations about it and was willing to support her friend. She knew Sloane was bound and determined to get on the House team this year, Sisse’s own parents would never hear of such a thing, Sisse after all had had to endure hours of lectures from her mother this summer on the unsuitability of a young lady in dueling club and flying club. Sloane’s parents however, were just about as quidditch invested as a family could get. So it was for Sloane’s sake that she pouted in commiseration of her friend’s situation before adding brightly, “But you did practice so much last year, surely that will help!

Oh, yes, let’s!” She agreed. “I think maybe that way?” Sisse pointed down the main way where the crowds seemed thicker. It seemed a reasonable enough guess that she began in that direction before Miss Hughes could object.

"Oh I really hope so! Ca-." Sloane stopped to correct her informal use of Cammie's first name in front of Sisse's chaperon, "Mr. Gillenwater had promised to help me once we get back too." With the whole month of August to practice and a few days at school itself, she felt good about this year. She just had to make it!

Sloane looped an arm through her friend's as they set off in search of entertainment. There had to be something fun to do, it was the fair after all! Almost all of them involved throwing something at something else. Maybe Sloane could use it as practice for tossing a quaffle, should she manage to make the team as chaser. "Around the corner I think!" She could hear the sounds of people laughing and general shenanigans coming from that way. "Though all of this food looks so good!" Sloane would insist on a snack after they played a few games.

Then you are certain to make the team!” Sisse assured her friend with a grin. Mr. Gillenwater had made the team as a second year and she was quite certain between him and Maddy that Sloane was in good hands. Not to mention Sloane’s whole family likely helped her practice this summer. Especially her oldest brother.

Together they set forward, Sisse was glad to have her friend beside her as they dodged into the crowds. She had quite missed the companionship of a female friend. Compared to Matthew and Henry it was quite the breath of fresh air. “Oh yes!” Sisse exclaimed as they rounded the corner. “What about that one?” She pointed at a tent set up around a display of upside down cups, people rossed rings at them. She thought they could do quite well with it. Although Sloane was right, the food did smell amazing.

Sloane followed Sisse's gaze and found a tossing game with which she was confident they could do well with. "Game first, food after!" Then they could take their snack and wander around to find another game or something else to occupy their time.

"I'm much better at catching things than tossing them, but this doesn't seem so bad." Sloane grinned as they approached the little booth to hop in the queue of people already waiting. "After this I definitely need a candy apple or something like that." She had an insatiable appetite for such a small creature and likely would need more than one snack over the course of their visit.

Watching as the person at the front took their attempt, she cheered along when the little boy managed to knock a few things down, earning some kind of prize, though Sloane couldn't see what. "I hope they haven't rigged it." Now that would be unfair!

Nodding, the two girls took their place in line, waiting patiently with Miss Hughes hovering a few steps behind them. “I think you’ll do great!” Sisse assured Sloane as she switched from one foot to the other watching as much as she could through the crowd.

Oh! I love candied apples.” She glanced around noting that there was a stand selling sweets not far away. She did have quite a sweet tooth. “I bet we can get one over there.” She pointed.

The crowd cheered as Sisse tried to peer back at the same, still reasonably shorter than the rest of the adults crowded in front with other kids. “What happened?” She asked Sloane, wondering if her friend had a better view.

Rigged. The idea hadn’t crossed her mind. “Oh. No. That would be terrible. I’d never manage to win any game then.” A frown crossed over Sisse’s lips at the thought. She didn’t think it would be too hard to play if the game weren’t rigged.

"I think we'll be fine," If that boy could do it a so could they! He looked a couple of years younger, but that couldn't make much difference. Sloane was a confident creature after all.

Following Sisse's gaze toward where they might find a treat, she could see some rather large apples just best the end and they looked positively mouth watering. In the meantime the people in front of them had all taken their turns and it was now then at the front of the line.

"You go first!" Sloane insisted, fishing for the coins needed to play in her pocket.

The line moved quickly and soon Sloane and Sisse stood at the front. Certain that Sloane would do much better than she, Sisse was grateful that she was going first. She handed the man in charge her coins and then took her rings. “Well here goes.” Sisse tossed the first ring and it landed with a flop between two cups, the second one slipped over a cup, and the third actually landed on a cup. “Oh!” Sisse grinned and the man gave her her prize. “Come on Sloane, you’re turn!” Sisse beamed at Sloane certain she’d get all three rings around cups.
