Did you know?

Fern-hunting parties became popular, allowing young women to get outside in a seemingly innocuous pursuit with less rigid oversight and chaperoning than they saw in parlors and drawing rooms. They may have even had the occasional romantic meetup with a similarly fern-impassioned beau. — Bree

Now that he had walked up to them, he couldn't exactly whirl around and get going. That would be rude. And was not, presumably, how straight men seduced their future wives.

Playing the Gentleman
May 31st, 1888 - Hogwarts Great Hall - Hogwarts Coming Out Ball

The Hogwarts Coming Out Ball, it was something that his whole social circle knew of, something the Season surrounded, and it was a ball. Kenton, while not wife-hunting, was inclined to go for the reason that most in his social circle would be attending. Not to mention that it was good to be seen out and about - and it was an excuse to see his sister in law. There would be no way that Phoebe would miss the Coming Out Ball and often expressed hope that he would attend. It was purely innocent in a way (one that Kenton almost resented) but just that of friends. He knew of her dalliances and each one annoyed him equally, he’d tell her so too, even knowing they’d only last a season each, but it didn’t keep him from poking fun at the naive gentleman she paraded around and past her husband - Kenton’s completely useless older brother.

The Yaxleys were off mingling as were his sisters and Kenton was quite alright with this turn of events this early in the evening. If he was going to be here he might as well enjoy himself, Phoebe couldn't be the only one having all the fun. Besides, it was good to see who would be out this season, what young pretty things he might stumble upon. He had settled onto an edge of the Great Hall and was sipping a glass of champagne as he surveyed his prey.

Focusing his attention on one young lady who had just been laughing with some friends but had begun to move away, Kenton decided to make his move. He stepped forward, “Good evening, might I be so bold as to ask for this dance?” Dances always seemed to have the idea of breaking the ice, sometimes they did, sometimes they didn’t. But at least it was a way to test the waters and with the beginning strains of a song beginning it was the perfect time for such a move.
Katherine had descended the stairs with an enchanting dress. An ivory one made out of fine silk with lace and pearl trimmings decorating it. Her light blond hair was neatly placed up with a headdress and veil pinned to it. It was nice to finally wear something other than black, gray and any gloomy shade of purple. Though she somewhat felt guilty since it was supposed to be disrespectful to her mother but her grandmother would have none of it.

The woman insisted that her first step as a member of society shouldn’t be marked with sadness but Kitty knew that her grandmother disliked her mother enough to skip the tradition, at least for tonight.

She had socialized with the attendees but she mostly spoke and danced with those who were now her former classmates. She and her friends were giggling about the male professors in attendance when she had excused herself. Mister Yaxley had blocked her and asked her for a dance. She immediately flashed him a sweet smiled “It would be a pleasure!”

Kenton flashed a charming smile at the young woman and held out his hand to escort her onto the dancefloor as the first strains of music began. “Shall we?” He politely bowed her forward.

Once they had lined up for the dance he smiled at the young woman. She had been one of the ones who had debuted this evening and was quite a lovely young thing. He wondered if anyone had noticed, rather hoping they had. Especially a certain someone. She wasn’t the only one who could have a plaything each season. Perhaps he ought to follow suit.

As they began the first steps he refocused his attention on the young lady. “I expect you are quite enjoying the evening.” Afterall it was her first ball, he’d bet and in a gown like that she was sure to have plenty attention the whole evening through.
Something about being in the presence of a handsome gentleman really makes a young lady like herself feel special, especially when it was her first ball as an adult. Truthfully though she felt like she was shining tonight and all eyes were on her. Kitty gave a curtsy and allowed him to escort her to the dance floor.

“Yes I am. I’ve been looking forward to it.” She smiled as they began to sway to the music of the orchestra. The coming out ball was the perfect final touch to her Hogwarts journey. She was going to miss most of it. “I hope you’re enjoying the affair as well. Are you a relative of a graduate?”
