Did you know?

First names were most often used by childhood or school friends. If the friendship was made after school age, first names would only really be used by women. Men were far more likely to refer to their friends by their surnames, a mark of familiarity. — Documentation

WANTED:

Emilia Wright for Jude Wright. Casually alienating offspring since 18882.
Separating was also not a great idea, though they weren't doing great at staying together anyway. If she were to volunteer to be the human sacrifice.. well... Hogsmeade had plenty of debutantes anyway...

May 20th, 1888 — Slytherin Common Room

"How important is history, in the grand scheme of things?" Elijah asked an older—and thus, more worldly—housemate after dramatically slamming his textbook shut with a sigh. He could not have cared less about the Order of Merlin or the myriad Goblin Rebellions—and neither would aid him in the slightest in his future as #1 Heir and General Rich Boy. If they would not help him academically, either, the second year reasoned, perhaps he could eschew them for something more exciting like potions, for all that it would be tested later in the upcoming week.

"I feel as though I shall be bored to death before I actually retain any of it!"

Open to a student in year 3+

Sixth year exams were utterly useless, Kristoffer had long since concluded. They were scarcely the horror of OWLs, and no matter how often the professors warned them that these examinations were the best practice they'd have for their NEWTs next year, the idea hadn't become any more compelling.

He was blinking back tears of boredom, himself, as he re-read over the theory behind conjuration for Transfiguration; not only had it become notoriously difficult this year, but Professor Wiltingham was his least favourite of the lot (and if he did not get to celebrate his NEWT in Transfiguration by successfully Vanishing her into the ether, it would be a giant waste of seven years).

Poor Urquart had a long way left to go with History of Magic, comparatively. Kristoffer snorted sympathetically at the question, and shook his head to showcase his disdain for the whole subject.

"The only good it does is make three years sound short," he put in with a roll of his eyes - and even if some of the Goblin Rebellions had been years longer, some of the classes still seemed to drag on for decades - "which, unfortunately, is still how much longer you've got to survive it for." Kris grinned, not envying Urquart in the slightest. "Better pace yourself, there." If one had expended all one's patience by second year, well - it wouldn't be pretty.

If Lestrange said it, it must be true. Almost immediately after being sorted, Elijah had recognized Kristoffer Lestrange ass the alpha dog he plainly was—a recognition that garnered the sixth year all the respect that Elijah could genuinely muster. Would he squash Lestrange like a bug if he got in his way? Absolutely. Did he think he had a hope in hell of accomplishing something like that now? Hah! Best to become your enemy and then best your enemy, as far as the second year was concerned.

“I hardly see the benefit of it from a practical sense,” the youngster sighed morosely. “I don’t suppose that you recall what was on the second year examination?”

It was a vain hope, the Slytherin knew. If Lestrange was anything like him, he’d shed the useless knowledge like the butterfly its chrysalis the second he could, freeing his mind up for better, more engaging pursuits.

“Half of the things we learn in this school won’t be of any practical use to us,” Kristoffer put in with a roll of his eyes, though he did rather enjoy getting to share pearls of of his ever-expanding wisdom with young, appreciative audiences. History was among the worst of them; fortunately, Urquart would probably have the sense to avoid such abominations like Muggle Studies when he chose his electives.

Unsurprisingly, Kristoffer didn’t recall much of second year. Surprisingly, he had passed, somehow. “I don’t know, the causes of the four-hundredth Goblin Rebellion in a century?” He said, in melodramatic hyperbole. “An essay question on witch hunts? Or were they third year -?” He shrugged, not especially interested in sifting through hazy memories of past exams for Urquart’s sake. The only good thing about goblin rebellions was the occasionally gruesome means of death they got to read about, as far as Kristoffer was concerned.

Elijah let out a dramatic sigh. Of course Lestrange didn’t remember—why should he? He was in his NEWT years now, engaged in subjects that were actually useful. Fortunately, the second year was not dependent upon a scholarship. Failing an examination would be embarrassing, but hardly a death sentence for his educational career.

“At least it will be over soon,” he allowed morosely.

"Ah, you'll be fine," Kristoffer said, without much thought on the matter. The overdramatics were almost expected, from the youths. It was still early days, when the kids still cared. Besides, even if Urquart were a great deal more dimwitted than he seemed, it was only logical in Kris' mind that the advantages of his upbringing would see him, regardless, in better stead than the lower class layabouts who still had trouble stringing together grammatical sentences. Once the riffraff got siphoned out of the school, Urquart's own - theoretical - deficiencies would start to become more obvious. But he had time yet.

He supposed he ought to encourage the second year to stick with his revision, perhaps offer to test him - but Kristoffer took option b) of less effort, and asked idly, instead: "Have you picked your electives for third year yet?"

“What would you recommend?” Elijah answered the question with one of his own.

Of course he had picked them, if not committed entirely, but the second year was not about to voice his selections aloud only to have the prefect question them, berate them. A part of the Slytherin still doubted he would make it to third year, but Lestrange’s choice of words suggested that that particular horse had already been beaten to death.

Ah, yet another opportunity to impart his sage life advice! Kristoffer was really spoiling Urquart today.

But that was alright, because Urquart was among the least objectionable of beneficiaries. As naive, hapless young pupils went.

"Oh, anything but Divination," Kristoffer said with an exaggerated roll of his eyes. Strictly speaking, "anything" was not true at all: Muggle Studies, for one, was so unthinkably useless a subject it didn't bear mentioning. But Divination, he admitted freely, was a subject he had taken through his OWL years, and regretted immensely. "Naturally, I presumed it'd be an utter doss," he explained, lest Urquart think him a fairy for having picked it in the first place, "but Carmichael still makes you work, as if his whole career's not bollocks." He shook his head in lingering exasperation, despite being free of the subject now.

He nodded—while Elijah had nearly signed up for just that course for just that reason, he had heard such reports in the nick of time. It was all very womanly, too, and so he knew he would never be able to respect Professor Carmichael for teaching it. The second year was happy indeed to have his choice validated in such a fashion.

“I thought that might be the case,” he responded as though he actually knew what the hell was going on in his life. “Instead, I’m considering Care of Magical Creatures and Arithmancy. I wish we didn’t need any electives, or at least that they could be something good like ‘Advanced Flight Techniques’.”

Kristoffer gave a non-committal shrug at the classes Urquart said he was considering, which was about as much enthusiasm as could be expected from him; he was sure the nonchalance on his face made the message clear. Which was, sure, they were fine, nothing objectionable about them. Kristoffer didn't know why anyone would want to take Care of Magical Creatures, particularly, but maybe Urquart was angling for working in the Beast Division one day, or something, he didn't know. He didn't care, either: Urquart was too young to be a useful acquaintance in life, yet.

"You'll get to do away with half your classes one day," Kris remarked again, with a sympathetic chuckle. "And flight techniques would be a better use of time - although," he added, narrowing his eyes at the boy expectantly, "you don't mean to say my quidditch coaching isn't quite advanced enough for you already?"
