Jasper Elias Kernaghan
his mother might have used Jas when he was young
May 24th, 1849
Owner of Kernaghan's Railway
Ravenclaw for 2 years
9 1/2 inches, Hornbeam, Phoenix feather, sturdy
None alive that he knows of
At first glance Jasper is entirely average. Blonde hair, dark eyes, unassuming build. At second glance his hair is quite sandy and almost silvery at times His eyes are not as dark as they seem; they are slate grey with blue undertones that really only show up when he’s wearing blue. He’s normally 5’6” but his sleeping habits were once so severe it affected his height. The spine naturally compresses through the course of the day but one time he went so long without sleeping that when he finally did he woke up a full half inch taller than when he fell asleep. He most often wears muggle fashions mostly because he finds waist coats far too useful to not wear every day and often has his made with extra pockets. This aside, he always prefers cloaks for cold. He is left handed but has long fallen into the forced habit of writing with his right and can use either for wandwork.
Jasper was the long awaited first child of Orville and Susan Kernaghan. His mother would experience several miscarriages after him before they would eventually give up trying for a second child. This meant all of their parental energies were focused on him.
The thus far steadfast, respectably successful, but ultimately mundane magical supply business kept the Kernaghans in a comfortable middle class lifestyle. By the time Jasper was old enough to walk it began to take a turn for the exotic and Orville was more than happy to travel to meet the increased demand for international items.
Long tired of being left behind, Susan soon demands Orville take them with him on his business trips and by the time Jasper displays his first sign of magic he’s visited more countries than he can count.
Susan decides the family needs one summer settled down before Jasper goes to Hogwarts. It is easily the most boring summer in Jasper’s life so far. He melts his first cauldron after adding a number of ingredients at random in a fit of boredom. Susan decides to send him to hogwarts with two
cauldrons. He is sorted into Ravenclaw and though he is largely outside most social circles he gets on well enough with his classmates. He excels in his classes, having long had the benefits of tutors but his grades sometimes suffer when he neglects his assignments in favor of more interesting subjects.
Just a few short weeks into his third year his mother dies quite unexpectedly and he is abruptly removed from school by his father and the two became “business partners”. It would take many many years for Jasper to realize how selfish his motivations were. They traveled together, Jasper attended all of his meetings, and he would even let Jasper make some pretty influential decisions when he got older.
He returns at the appointed time to take his exams through the Ministry. He gets O’s in Potions, Transfiguration, and Charms and probably got marks in other subjects but he can’t remember. His personal interests in Magical Theory and the less tangible studies of Magic probably would have meant he’d have been well suited to a career in the Department of Mysteries if it had ever occurred to him. As it was, he was only ever going to take over the family business.
And take it over he did. His father passes away from consumption and Jasper deals with his grief by ignoring it and diving into the work.
Jasper marries the daughter of a business contact because that is the sort of thing one does at this age and because he isn’t really social enough to find a wife elsewhere. Amelia has no interest in traveling with him and he only sees her when he comes home between trips. It's convenient and is good for what it is.
From the start pregnancy did not suit Amelia. In the end even weeks of bed rest ordered by the midwife could not save her. Jasper knows it was preterm labor and hemorrhage that killed her but sometimes he likes to think she passed in her sleep. He’s developed a kind of nostalgic fondness for her, caring more now for the memory of her than he ever did for her as a person. He’s made no attempt to court since.
Jasper’s natural quirks have magnified with age and his often solitary life style, compounded by the side effects from magical experiments that regularly backfire. He employs a ‘personal assistant’ who probably thought he was getting a promotion when he took the job. He is little more than an over glorified butler. Still, he is the reason Jasper can go about his life like a normal person. He does things like make sure Jasper is always dressed to a socially acceptable standard when he leaves the house, remind him to eat and sleep if it’s been too long, run the house, balance the ledgers, and besides the paper is Jasper’s best source on what day of the week it is. So if he occasionally convinces Jasper it's Thursday when it's actually Tuesday and cooks the books a bit to pad his own pockets… well he’s earned it.
Despite being unofficial captain of the Hot Mess Express
Jasper finds himself in the charge of an American Debutante when her family wanted to put some distance between her and her indiscretions in America. His assent meant securing an incredibly opportunistic contract with an American Magical cosmetics company. On top of her general care he was charged with finding her a suitable husband.
Unable to find her a husband he travels with her to the U.S. to return her to her family and disappears shortly thereafter.
With no word from Jasper, Gregson soon assumes he is dead and seizes his opportunity. Having long been involved in the workings of Jasper’s business and with no shortage of time to practice forging his signature, is not difficult for Gregson to essentially take over. Operating under the guise that Jasper’s known oddities had culminated in him becoming a recluse, every move he made was masked as orders from Jasper, locked away in his home.
Jasper resurfaces as a guest of one of the visiting American dignitary families and gets trapped in the ensuing limbo event. Being magically suspended in time to such a degree has left its mark. Though he was often absent minded before he now suffers significant memory loss and retention issues. He has come home to find his house sold, his wealth significantly expanded, his household moved to Wellingtonshire, and his business changed from magical supply to a literal railroad. He has little to no memory of the last few years is understandably quite confused.
