Adult Potion Brewing April '88: Group D
#1
April 14th, 1888 — Potioneers' Guild, London
"Wit-sharpening potions will be your first task. Please kindly refrain from sampling your potion - if you've brewed it correctly you will have just earned yourself a nice disqualification, and if you haven't... Well, I'd rather not be sending anyone to a healer this afternoon." He smiled warmly at them while imagining all the other places he'd much rather be on a Saturday. "Please begin."

Ezra Vablatsky Ambrosia Shinnick Timothy Ainsworth @'Dionisia Tweedy' @'Lucille Flint'

Timothy listened as the man spoke and when they were bid to begin, he did so. Once he had finished his potion, he indicated that he had done so before stepping back to wait for the others to finish and the judging to be done.

Deftly, the healer set to work on his potion. Events such as this offered Ezra an opportunity to hone his brewing skills, which were not tested as much in his hospital ward as they might be in others. Winning was not his aim, though he would have been lying to say that avoiding making a fool of himself was.

At last, he was done—and not the last person who could boast as much, either. He signalled to the judge.

When Bella had asked Lucy if she’d participate in the Potions Brewing Contest in London this weekend Lucy had happily agreed. She loved getting off the Flint lands and besides, potions in school hadn’t be [i]that[i] bad. If fact she’d rather enjoyed it. As such Lucy happily set about the task before her at the man’s instructions, setting her ingredients out in front of her and enjoying the routine of it all.

While by no means experienced as a potioneer or healer who spent their days making potions, Dionisia did have experience beyond her OWL-level Potions class. She'd always considered herself intelligent, and could have probably finished her education if she would have had the funds to pay for her school supplies.

She stood beside her opponents, examining everything from their faces to the quality of their clothes in the time leading up to the beginning of the round. Once they were all given the go-ahead, Dionisia spent her time brewing her potion, not allowing the nerves of competition to get to her. Besides, it wasn't like her job — it wasn't life or death.

When she finished, she took a step back and waited for judgment.

Ambrosia stood at the ready to begin her potion as she listened to the administrator with her hands folded, until she was directed to begin. She wasn't the only society woman in the running, and that made her feel more at ease about her odds. When instructed to, she began, working stable and quick to complete the potion.

Once completed, Ambrosia stepped back from the cauldron, and awaited judgement.

Surprisingly, it was the librarian's potion that put all the others to varying levels of shame. Vabltasky's potion, meanwhile, was emitting a very strange odor that reminded Charles distinctly of rancid seaweed. He wrinkled his nose and passed by it with haste. Miss Shinnick's potion was equally questionable although more for the viscosity and odd coloration. The others had brewed their potions satisfactorily. "Mr. Ainsworth, Miss Tweedy, and Miss Flint will be progressing in the competition. The next potion to brew is a Calming Draught. Begin!"

Timothy was quite pleased with his accomplishment. He didn't pay ,uch mind to the other two people that had also progressed to the next round. Instead, he immediately set to work once they were told to begin brewing a calming draught. Working steadily, he still managed to be the first one done.

With her gaze on the table below her, Dionisa let a proud smile find its way onto her lips. It was only round one, but still. It somewhat validated that, despite her lack of NEWTs, she wasn't lacking skill-wise. When Dionisia learned that she had to make a Calming Draught, the smile only deepened; she'd made plenty of those as a mediwitch!

She worked diligently to complete it, stepping back as she'd done before when it was completed.

Lucy smiled at her success, she didn't make many potions during the season but in her downtime this winter she had created a few, if only to keep her busy. She found it relaxing and wasn't scolded for doing a maid's work in her endeavors. A calming draught was handy to have on hand and she'd attempted it a few times before so she once again set about her task, casting a few glances at the gentleman beside her who wasn't half bad to look at. Perhaps she'd try to talk to him when this was all over, if even a chance. It never hurt to try.

Charles eyed Miss Tweedy's cauldron and noted the overly watery contents. Hrmmm. Miss Flint's was only slightly better, while Mr. Ainsworth had proven consistent in his skill. "Commiserations, Miss Tweedy, you will not be progressing in the competition. Miss Flint, Mr. Ainsworth, please prepare a Shrinking solution."

Timothy smiled at the fact that he'd done well enough to progress forward. Getting started on the shrinking solution, he worked diligently and carefully. Despite his careful potion brewing, he was still the first to finish.

Lucy was somewhat surprised that her potion had made it through, afterall she had certainly seen better results from herself, but the announcement did make her smile. It was only her and the gentleman left, and while not a competitive person, Lucy was excited to have not lost all her skills in the year since school. But a shrinking potion…. She swallowed, she didn’t think she’d made one of those since she had been in her sixth year. Well a competition was a competition and she wasn’t going to quit now. For the third time she started on her potion, although feeling slightly less confident than she had before, and finished only a few minutes after the gentleman.

There was an almighty rumble and then Miss Flint's cauldron promptly exploded. Charles was relieved the icky contents of the cauldron missed his skin, but he watched with dismay as a few droplets left his clothes pock marked in a few places. "Suffice to say, Mr. Ainsworth has the superior potion."
