November 10th, 1888 — The Great Hall

It was not, perhaps, his favourite way to spend the day, but if Headmaster Black was here, Hamish knew he could hardly make his own excuses. The man was as surly as they came! Besides, it was good to encourage the youngsters to participate.

"The ingredients you will need are to my right," Hamish explained brightly, not gesturing to the cabinet in question as he assumed the children were not blind. "You may begin!"

At the last, the ingredients and directions for a Cure for Boils appeared on the blackboard behind him.

Camille might have been a little too happy to not have been placed in a group with her sister. The very idea of competing against her sister sent shivers down her spine. If she had won, Holly would hate her. If she had lost, Holly would never have let her hear the end of it.

A cure for boils was the potion that they were to make. Briefly scrunching her nose at the thought of boils, Camille reminded herself that this was a cure for them in order to help focus. Getting the ingredients needed, she worked quickly. Even if her sister wasn’t here, she certainly wanted bragging rights. Especially if Holly lost in her own group.

Faye bit her lip anxiously and set about her task hoping not to mess up entirely. The plain looking Ravenclaw had spent some time on her potions books in the run up to the competiton - at the very least her technique could be improved by some studing.

When she was told to start, she set about her task - boils - she had done some revision on that topic. Faye worked diligently and finished in good time. Checking her results she raised her hand to indicate that she was finished.

Potions was not her strong suit, instead it was the class she had to work at. She had spent countless hours practicing her potions and was thrilled to find this potion was actually one she was relatively adept at. With a smile Sisse set to work.

Archer quite enjoyed potions. He liked the rules and the need to follow specific directions, but he also loved how experimental it could be. There wasn't a potion for everything, but what if there could be? What if someone could invent a cure for lycanthropy or other conditions? The versatility of it all was what truly drove his interest in the subject while he impatiently waited to be able to take Ghoul Studies.

Competitions, on the other hand, weren't on his list of favorite things. His housemates had pressured him to enter, and he found himself regretting the decision to cave in to peer pressure as he stood listening to Professor Darrow's instructions.

When they were given the go ahead to begin, Archie's face turned a pale, green-ish shade. He was familiar with a Cure for Boils, but the pressure of it all, and the thought that others might be watching him, had the boy quietly working with his head bowed and shoulders hunched.

He worked a bit more slowly than his classmates, steadily, methodically. When he had completed the task, he sheepishly raised his hand, trying not to make any sort of eye contact with anyone.

Why did he volunteer to do this again?

Given that Miss Rookwood’s potion was on fire, Hamish thought it unlikely to cure anything. Miss Scrimgeour’s fared better, but was just poor enough in comparison to those of Miss Thompsett and young Mr. Belby that she would not make the cut. Hamish bid the young ladies adieu, cleared the mess, and directed the remaining pair to begin crafting a swelling solution.

Swelling potions were more difficult, Sisse thought as she realized she had some how managed to make it to the next round. At least she had practiced as much as possible. Determined to do her best she set to work.

He'd made it on to the next round. By the look on the poor boy's face, it was clear he hadn't believed he would. Or, rather, he'd hoped he wouldn't so the pressure that weighed so heavily on his shoulders could be lifted.

However, he wasn't one to give up or do things halfway, even when he felt a panic attack creeping up. His family was at Hogwarts, after all. The shame of them finding out he had ran off was a good motivator to complete the task.

The swelling solution proved to be a bit more complicated, but he channeled all his concentration on it, very carefully following the directions.

Hamish was no potions expert, but he did not think it a good sign that the young Ravenclaw’s potion had begun to eat through his potion. After declaring Miss Thompsett the winner and awarding her five house points, Hamish hurried to tend to the mess before it could become a calamity.
