There were plenty of reasons to have kept it a secret - chiefly shame - but not out of consideration! How patronizing of her to think she'd lap up that excuse without a second thought! "Perhaps not," she began archly, "but it might have saved me from a great deal of turmoil! If I'd only have known what you had done... But of course that would have deprived of your precious sense of superiority over me."
