Ari's hands on hers were enough to send Zelda crumpling forward, burying her face in her brother's shoulder. She didn't cry, but she did breathe heavily, tightening her grip on his hands. This was the sort of thing that happened to other girls, stupider girls, not to her. Zelda was supposed to be smart, and clever, and here in the course of the year she had found herself in love with her sister's ex and, when that faded, possibly knocked up by J. Alfred Darrow.
"J. Alfred Darrow," Zelda said into Ari's shirt, voice muffled by the cloth. "He was leaving and I think he's going to die and I just..." The timing had been terrible. The timing had been terrible, and so Zelda had been sad and wanted to talk to him and somehow being sad and wanting to talk to him had turned into not wanting him to leave.
"And he left and I'm still here and I don't want to have a baby, Ari," she said, really almost crying now.
