Archer Belby vs. Celeste Benet - Hamish Darrow - February 10, 2019

February 9th, 1889 — Hogwarts Great Hall

Dueling was far from Hamish’s specialty, but the Deputy Headmaster was always happy to lend a hand—after all, it was something different from his regular routine and at his age, ‘different’ was key. The professor reviewed the rules for the youngsters before inviting the Ravenclaw to begin.

Why did people insist on talking him into participating in contests under the guise of it increasing his self-confidence? If anything, he was positive it was only going to make it worse! He eyed the Gryffindor he only sort of knew from lessons together while he listened to Professor Darrow explain the rules. Archer hoped she would be the first up, but, when it didn't seem to be the case, the boy gulped and shakily bowed as was proper.

In practice, he wasn't too bad at dueling. However, with the pressure of others watching and it being some sort of contest, he was a bundle of nerves. "P-p-petrificus Totalus," he stuttered out, one eye half closed.

Cele didn't know why she'd decided to sign up for this, but figured it didn't matter. She was going to so her best. She couldn't remember any shield charms, so she used a tickling charm instead.

Hamish could not help but wince at young Belby's stutter, suspecting that that was the reason his spell had failed to work. To the young Gryffindor, he awarded the first point and directed to begin the next pass.

Cele felt bad for the Ravenclaw. Not that she wanted to get petrified, but the spell hadn't even tried to hit her. She decided to use the knockback jinx.

Heat rushed to his cheeks when he realized not even a spark had emitted from his wand. He had feared he would be dismal at this particular contest, but he hadn't expected to not even be able to cast a spell.

Hands sweaty, he turned to face Miss Benet, determined for his next attempt to at least be a minor success. He felt lightheaded. Please, don't faint.

"Lumos!" he practically yelled. Maybe he could distract her with sudden light? Honestly, he was so flustered that it was the only spell that even sort of came to his mind.

Hamish was not in the least certain what lightening the tip of the boy's wand was intended to do, but if it had been meant to protect him from the oncoming knockback jinx, it failed utterly. The professor, rather unnecessarily, declared Miss Benet the victor.
