Declan Wood vs. Bella Scrimgeour - Eugene Scamander - January 31, 2019

February 2nd, 1889 - Howlers Stadium

Eugene really wasn't too sure about this, but here he was. Letting him moderate and judge duels was pretty uh, well, risky. His specialty was animals, not people. After reiterating the rules to the competitors, Eugene bade Mr. Wood to begin.

Declan didn't typically fair well in the duels, but if there was any sort of money involved, he wasn't about to let the opportunity pass by. Adrenaline pumping, he pointed his wand at his opponent and attempted a rope-binding jinx.

Bella had always been a poor dueler, but her desire for adventure - even outside the Hebrides, where she'd admittedly settled into a routine - compelled her to sign up. She knew of Declan Wood from their few shared years at Hogwarts, but their separate circles at the time had prevented her from knowing anything more than his name and house. She definitely had an advantage when it came to education, but, as she thought wearily, it made no difference if those years were wasted floundering about in the classroom.

"Protego!" she cast in response, not too keen on being bound by ropes in front of dozens of spectators.

Well, this was going to be good. Neither one seemed overly confident, but maybe that was a ploy. Who knew.

Or maybe he was right. Mr. Wood's jinx left a lot to be desired, and if Miss Scrimgeour's shield had been any worse, it wouldn't have proved useful at all. "This round goes to Miss Scrimgeour," Just barely. "You may begin the next round."

So her NEWTs had paid off - at least sort of. She smiled sheepishly at the judge as she was announced the winner of the round before turning her attention back to her opponent. Was there a single offensive spells that she knew she could cast without difficultly? Perhaps she should turn her attention to charms instead...

"Confundo!" she cast this time, with a little more confidence than the last.

Embarrassing, but at least he hadn't been the only one who had failed miserably. Hopefully his quidditch chums weren't somewhere in the crowd watching, ready to tease him when they saw him at practice later on.

He only knew one defensive spell, so attempted an, "Expelliarmus!"

Overall the second round was better, and Miss Scrimgeour continued to take hold of her small edge over Mr. Wood. Her confundus charm landed square in Mr. Wood's chest, leaving him thoroughly loopy. Eugene smothered a bark of laughter and set to straighten everything away. "The duel to Miss Scrimgeour. Well played."
