Crazy Rich Asians
Picked this up on a recommendation from Beanie, though I'd hoped to read it anyways before seeing the movie. From goodreads:
Crazy Rich Asians is the outrageously funny debut novel about three super-rich, pedigreed Chinese families and the gossip, backbiting, and scheming that occurs when the heir to one of the most massive fortunes in Asia brings home his ABC (American-born Chinese) girlfriend to the wedding of the season.
When Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home, long drives to explore the island, and quality time with the man she might one day marry. What she doesn't know is that Nick's family home happens to look like a palace, that she'll ride in more private planes than cars, and that with one of Asia's most eligible bachelors on her arm, Rachel might as well have a target on her back. Initiated into a world of dynastic splendor beyond imagination, Rachel meets Astrid, the It Girl of Singapore society; Eddie, whose family practically lives in the pages of the Hong Kong socialite magazines; and Eleanor, Nick's formidable mother, a woman who has very strong feelings about who her son should--and should not--marry. Uproarious, addictive, and filled with jaw-dropping opulence, Crazy Rich Asians is an insider's look at the Asian JetSet; a perfect depiction of the clash between old money and new money; between Overseas Chinese and Mainland Chinese; and a fabulous novel about what it means to be young, in love, and gloriously, crazily rich.
I've spent some time in Asia and have numerous Asian friends (CBC and ABC mostly), though none at "crazy rich" levels xD This resonated so well with me—I can't imagine how refreshing it must be for someone actually acquainted with the countries and cultures portrayed here!
On the whole, I found the novel to be equal parts sensational and entirely relatable, which I think is an ideal balance in any book. Can't wait for the film, or to read the rest of the trilogy! <3
This is a discussion thread for people who have read or are reading the book in question. With that in mind, there are likely to be spoilers throughout. However, in the event of major twists or “how it ends”, please wrap content in spoiler tags.

THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD AND SO FUN
I am so excited for the movie, it comes out next Friday! Has anyone delved into the other two books of the trilogy yet?

I just ordered the second one today—it'll deliver on Monday. I'll have finished Guernsey by then and done a bit more with Dark, so I should be able to read it shortly thereafter

I still haven’t gotten the copy from my library!! I’m missing the card

(
Also I love how Rachel and Nick are both in their thirties because I feel like a lot of romcom folks are early 20s which... no.

I've briefly started the 2nd book! It's so amazing so far I'm SO excited!!! ALSO WARNING, don't look up any descriptions of the books. I accidentally spoiled a little of it for myself because of a small description (not a synopsis), and I'm pissed at myself. I mean, the author kind of hints at what spoiled something for me early on in the Prologue, but
still I would have liked to enjoy that surprise for myself.

YES! I also love how in the movie, Rachel is played by Constance Wu, who is a single, smart businesswoman but Constance also plays Jessica on Fresh Off the Boat, who is a stay at home mom of 3. I feel like that just proves wrong the stereotype that once you play a mom on a tv show you can't go to a kind of 'having the time of your life without seeming like you're desperate for love and your ovaries are drying up' rom-com, if that makes sense.
Longer review to come later!

I’ve also read a bit abt how it’s important how Classically Desirable Nick is — namely because there’s the stereotype of Asian men being unattractive! His actor (whose name I’m forgetting) is gorg and so is book nick, god I love book nick.

So I recently encountered some criticism lately, not of the book but of Nick as being a Terrible Person. Thoughts?

I've seen people criticize him for not warning Rachel abt his famjam but I feel for him because he... tried? Did a terrible job, but TRIED?
