Introducing… Dorothea “Thea” Potts



MCHB || Hufflepuff ‘84 || Hogsmeade || Governess and Agony Aunt


Dorothea is the eldest Daughter of a branch of the Potts family of north Bartonburg. She is a friendly and kind hearted person who could probably be sometimes described as faux-upper class, being middle blooded but very concerned about reputation and etiquette, making her a good governess. She enjoys helping people to the point of nosiness because of course she must be the person with the answers you seek.

Family

  • She has a large extended family and would have attended Hogwarts surrounded by up to five of her cousins at any one point. She enjoys this large group of connections and would like to regularly meet with the likes of Millie Potts Laurel Potts Zinnia Gallagher Daffodil Grimstone Thistle Potts Dahlia Honeyduke
  • While friendly, her belief that in general that she knows best might rankle some of her family, perhaps giving advice how they should have handled a situation differently, after it happens.
  • If any family are caught in scandal of their own devices she will likely be supportive with a hint of judgement but also keeping her own self at a slight distance to protect herself.


Friends
  • Graduated in 1884 from Hufflepuff and would have had plenty of friends. She didn't get the greatest academic grades but they were good enough and her etiquette marks were always impeccable.
  • Her social circle now probably also included other governesses, chaperons and more well turned out maids


Romance
  • She does wish to marry, hopefully before she turns thirty but is picky, she wont court a scoundrel or anyone else that might put her name into disrepute. Her work will make her mostly available during the school term while she is on retainer, but summers and school holidays she will have little time for courting, as expected of a governess. She is probably best suited for an upper middle class man who is also invested in his reputation and station.
  • She will likely have had a couple potential romantic connections since her debut but nothing that succeeded in marriage.
Agony Aunt
  • A little project I want to do with Witch Weekly to have her receive mail from Women with problems and then publish them (anonymously under a pseudonym) along with a response including advice. IC she does this under a pen name and noone but her employers her true identity in order to best protect the readers. Will be prepping a code to send your questions to me but below is a first draft.

Laurel and Dahlia are always down for friends.

Also, I believe she is of an age with Marie-Louise Prewett (Malou) and possibly Shalott Dempsey (Lottie). The latter was a Ravenclaw too (although you've got Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff listed in two different locations). Lottie would be the more likely choice for a friend as she had tons of friends in school and Malou was a shy Slytherin.

Laurel Potts

Would love to write with the family and Thea's potential friends from school. Hufflepuff is the correct house, added ravenclaw by mistake. Dorothea has the confidence of her own self that she would happily he the one to make a friendship happen with other girls. I might quite like to have her have a small circle of old friends where perhaps she can privately relax her otherwise quite polished demeanor.

Daff is the easiest connection, though probably wouldn't do well with being nitpicked about anything or made to feel less than, if that's the vibe she gets, she might be a little distant.

Elsie Kirke & Angie Swan were in her year, though I'm pretty sure she wouldn't associate with either one now. Elsie eloped in '91 and it was obvious later it's because she was pregnant. Angie might have been someone she sought for a friend in school, as Angie was a proper UC girl at the time, but obviously is not anymore.

Sage Whitby was a housemate a couple of years behind and super friendly, she's got a good public rep, but has some skeletons in her closet.

I have Zinnia Gallagher for fam, but obviously she just went through a scandal xD If Thea even gave a hint of judgement, Zin would 100% avoid her because she's already seen and felt it from everyone else.

Sadly I don't have anyone else to really offer. Maybe Gus here? They briefly overlapped, so could be acquaintances. He would also teach the kids she was a governess for.

More family! Her cousins would know Thea's advice and nitpicking only comes from a place of love and wanting to see her family happy, she loves her family very much. Her cousins also, being of similar age and having grown up together are probably used to it and know how to shut her up with the right look. It would mostly be Millie as her much younger sister that bares the brunt of a more instructive nitpicking. Specifically regards Zinnia Gallagher she is much more annoyed by the people being mean and gossiping than she could be about what is admittedly (in her mind) a silly thing to do. But I can imagine Zinnia would give her a "just dont" look before she even opens her mouth and the Thea makes a zipping gesture before just enjoying her cousin and her baby cousin once removed. The judgement side is probably again more apparent to Millie when they are alone together as something if a cautionary tale. It would be fun to do a thread, perhaps a family event or trip.

Dorothea also probably needs her cousins for advice as they have found husbands and she had not.

Regards Gus Lissington, as Thea's ward is both blind and partial abled (Hyacinth Valenduris) , it is likely that Thea has interacted with the professors a little more than a lot of guardians to help them meet her needs so they may well have crossed paths and gotten to know each other at least a little.

Obviously, Millie Potts here is open and ready to mix with her big sis! She needs plenty of guidance, even though they might butt heads on some of it, especially regarding Zinnia's scandal and any overbearingly mother-like tendencies. Millie will certainly take it better from Thea than she would from their mum. We already have a thread started, so that'll be a good place to start.

As for Charley Goode, it's possible there would be a chance encounter with her when Thea is out and about with her ward, but otherwise they don't have much reason to cross paths. She might just laugh at the absurd situations she reads in the Witch Weekly.

Being used used to it and tolerating it are two different things, especially because Daff has always been supportive of her sisters (and cousins) without any judgement and probably would stand up for Millie or Zinnia if she thought it was too much.

That said, she's around and available for threads!

Perfect, feel free for Daf to chastise her if she pushes her luck. Dorothea though should also be used to her cousins and know where their limits are so hopefully won't come across as mean, as that isn't the plan. Just sometimes offering perhaps unwelcome advise. Smile

It shall be fun to see where she lands into the extended family.

Would love a Laurel and Dorothea thread! And I definitely think given Hufflepuff that Lottie and her could have been friends. Happy to do a thread to try it out.

Cassius Lestrange was a year mate but I don't think they'd know each other well

If she needs a job could be the governess for Seraphina Bythesea's youngest.
