Did you know?

The Language of the Flowers was a popular method to express feelings where words might be improper, but did you know other means of doing so? Some ladies used their parasols, as well as their fans, gloves, and hankies to flirt with a gentleman (or alternatively, tell them to shove it!). — Bree

WANTED:

Ester Montgomery for Thomas Montgomery. The one that got away (with the pornographer...)
This boy, then. He wasn't new. Wasn't one of the worst people in the common room, those rotten rich boys - like Mr. Jailkeeper - who could not fathom a world beyond their own farts. Was a good working class lad, so he'd heard. Had a bit of a weird looking face, and a bit of a weird thing for preaching. Still.

Gervaise Ollivander
PROFILE

Full Name: Gervaise Brampton Ollivander

Nickname(s):

Birthdate: January 13th, 1853

Age: 35

Occupation: Wandmaker & Owner of Ollivander's Wands, London

Blood Status: Pureblood

Residence: Diagon Alley, above the shop.

Hogwarts House: Gryffindor

Wand: Birch, 11". Swishy, with a griffin feather.

Family:
Gerbold Ollivander, Father [1827-1884]
Gideon Ollivander, Brother [1854]
Violet MacFusty nee Ollivander, Sister [1860], and family

Temerita Reid, Apprentice [1866]
APPEARANCE
Gervaise's build is a stout one; standing at five feet, six inches, one would never suggest he could be easily knocked over. His nose was broken once in a brawl; his hair is dark where his eyes are light, and he dresses stylishly where possible. He writes with his right hand, but uses his left for wandwork and is adept with both when it comes to wandmaking.

PERSONALITY
CHARMER — CLEVER — BRASH — PROUD — WANDLORE GEEK

His is an energetic nature; always one to get bored if he isn't doing something of interest, he'll bounce from one project to the next—eventually completing everything, though deadlines were never his strong suit. To see his schedule—from social calls, to work at the shop, to less-than wholesome evening activities—one would think he never sleeps, though his attitude takes an obvious downturn when this is actually the case.

He is at first always friendly, outgoing, even charismatic—until given a reason to behave otherwise. His sister, for example, bears the brunt of this: where he should be protective, loving, Gervaise is instead scornful, mocking, as she is, in his eyes, at fault for the loss of his mother. When men end up in his bad books, particularly in a tavern setting, Gervaise has a bit of a violent streak in him as well. He is particularly charming where women are concerned, drawn especially to those he can't have: he has always loved a challenge. Age, fortunately, has tempered many of these qualities, but they lurk ever-present at the back of his mind, waiting for a chance to make a resurgence.

His is also cursed with something of an addictive personality: while he can go for long periods without drinking, he has a difficult time stopping once he begins for the evening and has, on more than one occasion, woken up in a watering trough. More difficult, however, is his fondness for gambling, a fondness he cannot curb for very long.

OTHER
SKILLS
❧ Unsurprisingly, Gerviase is skilled at wandmaking and maintenance.
❧  Can count cards.
❧  A passable beater for pickup quidditch matches, having played in school
❧  Proficient in French and German out of necessity, since they have lots of nice trees there that he wants hacked up.
HISTORY
Childhood & Hogwarts

January 13th, 1853 | Gervaise Brampton Ollivander is born the first child in the family, his middle name the given name of his maternal grandfather.

1854 | The family is joined by a second son.

December, 1856 | He shows his first sign of magic. Having accidentally gotten into his father's store of wands, he grabs one from its box when no one is looking and inadvertently lights the candle in front of him with it. The fact that the table underneath it caught on fire soon after proved to be irrelevant, as Gerbold set the wand aside for him until Gervaise was old enough to wield it properly.

February 13th, 1860 | What should have been a happy event—the birth of Gervaise's only sister—proves tragic when her life brings about his mother's death, a mother to whom Gervaise had been particularly close. His immense dislike of the new addition is, in his mind, vindicated by the fact that she is not even given a "G" name, the typical Ollivander way.

September, 1864 | Gervaise begins his schooling at Hogwarts, where he is sorted into Gryffindor.

1866 | In his third year, Gervaise tries out for—and receives—a position on the house quidditch team as a beater. Care of Magical Creatures is added to his roster of courses.

November, 1867 | At fourteen, Gervaise loses his virginity to a working class girl in the year above him, who does not return to school after her OWLs for financial reasons.

1869 | His fifth year goes by rather uneventfully, and he is awarded OWLs in all his subjects—though nothing higher than an E. He does not remain in Hogwarts as his father thinks it best he begin to learn the family trade. Gerviase resents having these important life decisions made for him.

Adulting

1873 | Some school friends, having graduated, invite Gervaise to an underground boxing match. It is here that he gets his first taste of the joys of gambling.

1874 | By now, Gerviase is finally beginning to develop a genuine interest in, even love for, the craft that he's been expected to master.

1877 | In the wake of the kerfuffle with the muggles, Gerbold elects to open shop in Hogsmeade, moving the family there. The Diagon Alley premises is entrusted to a shop manager, with the actual crafting taking place now in Hogsmeade.

October, 1883 | Hamish MacFusty is daft enough to take on Gervaise's sister, making Violet a married woman. To be honest, he always liked MacFusty and this marks the beginning of his tentative not-disliking of his lone sister.

1884 | Fire and brimstone plague. A blaze at the Hogsmeade shop claims Gerbold's life. In the wake of his passing, the brothers—always on the verge of a feud but never quite making it there—decide it would be best for their relationship to split up the business. Naturally, Gervaise claims the shop that hasn't been burnt to ash, and relocates to London.

1885 | After some hesitation towards the idea, Gervaise takes on Miss Temerita Reid as an apprentice. He's hardly likely to be walking down the aisle anytime soon, and given how frequently disasters pop up in Magical Britain, someone ought to have the Ollivander skill set. Just in case.

1887 | Gervaise makes the acquaintance of Miss —, a herbologist working at the tree farm from which some of his materials are harvested. He finds her charming, if a bit peculiar, and by year's end, the pair are courting.

1888 | The pair become engaged.

GOT A NEW THREAD FOR ME?

❧ I am almost always down for throwing characters together if you have some sort of 'hook' for me because...

❧ I don't care for "meet & greet" threads and if I find myself in one, am prone to causing explosions.

❧ For planned (non-open) threads, I prefer to have a vague idea of setting and potential goals, but the the understanding that those goals may not come to pass—characters can be dicks that way ;)

I do not pre-plan romance. Even if my character is happily married, there should always be the understanding that this can change!

I prefer fade-to-black for sexual situations. I don't have anything against smut per se, but I would rather write no smut than bad smut!

❧ I am a teacher who also volunteers with young children. Student-professor relationships are firm no-go areas for me.

❧ My posts typically range in length from 100 to 300 words. They will sometimes be longer and sometimes shorter, depending on what the thread demands.

❧ Please give me a heads up if you intend on anything that can damage my character's reputation or send them into mourning!
