Did you know?

The Language of the Flowers was a popular method to express feelings where words might be improper, but did you know other means of doing so? Some ladies used their parasols, as well as their fans, gloves, and hankies to flirt with a gentleman (or alternatively, tell them to shove it!). — Bree

This boy, then. He wasn't new. Wasn't one of the worst people in the common room, those rotten rich boys - like Mr. Jailkeeper - who could not fathom a world beyond their own farts. Was a good working class lad, so he'd heard. Had a bit of a weird looking face, and a bit of a weird thing for preaching. Still.

Merriweather Mulciber

Full Name: Merriweather Walter Mulciber

Nickname(s): Sunny by particularly snarky friends

Birthdate: June 9th 1871

Age: 16

Occupation: Sixth Year

Blood Status: Pure

Residence: Wellingtonshire, Hogsmeade

Hogwarts House: Slytherin

Wand: Willow, 10", rigid, phoenix feather

Family: Ernest Mulciber, b. 1847 | Father
Having been indifferent to his father's indifference in childhood, Merriweather has been increasingly bothered by it as he grows older, and craves Ernest's approval.
Blanche Mulciber nee something, b. 1850, d. 1871 | Mother
Merriweather killed his mom by being born. Sorry, mom.
Rufina Mulciber nee Longbottom, b. 1855 | Step-mother
Once very close, Merriweather has grown distant from Rufina as he ages up and attempts to create something of a masculine identity.
Flora Mulciber, b. 1878 | Half-Sister
Fine, he guesses.

Rufus Wilde, b. 1882 | Lodger & Half-Brother
Why the fuck do we take care of this kid, anyways?

Marguerite Mulciber, b. 1820 | Grandmother
In his snarkier moments, Merriweather attributes any family dysfunction to grandmother's... entire deal.

Through Rufina, Merriweather may as well be related to the Longbottoms etcetera.
p> Having always been rather - let's face it - sickly, perhaps it isn't a surprise that Merriweather has always looked younger than he ought to. He's often mistaken for a fourth year, which is a disappointment seeing as he's literally about to come of age. Ffss. While Ernest's genetics should have given him more height, Merriweather stands at the unfortunate height of 5'6", and is hoping to pop up a few more inches nonetheless. It's unlikely.

He has a thin - some might say 'scrawny' - build, and is frustrated by his complete lack of ability to grow any stubble. He has dark hair that stands at odd angles, and is right-handed. Merriweather dresses well, but teenage boy well, so often his clothes are a little out of place.

A kind boy who takes his deep-seated insecurities and channels them at the world through weaponized sarcasm. Craves paternal affection. Clever, but lacks confidence in academics. This insecurity has led Merriweather to pursue social gains, and he's a very good conversationalist, especially around other students. Has somehow inherited Rufina's stubbornness despite not being related. His tendency towards illness has led Merriweather to become somewhat of a hypochondriac, albeit a justified one.
BOGGART: Merriweather is very disturbed by the concept of his own death, and any boggart manifests as himself as a corpse

Born in 1871, Merriweather has the misfortune to more or less immediately cause his mother's death. Shit. He has very evidently inherited his mother's frailty, and spends much of his childhood battling whatever cold is going around at the time.

One of Merriweather's first memories is of his father's marriage to Rufina Mulciber in 1874. He is rather immediately fond of his step-mother, who is by upper class-standards doting with her children and step-children. It's likely this which has Merriweather fond of his sister, Flora, when she arrives in 1878. Too young to be aware of his step-mother's miscarriages, Merriweather has a primarily uneventful  childhood, and shows signs of magic sometime in 1879 in some dramatic show of temper.

In 1882, Merriweather goes off to school and finds himself sorted into Slytherin. A social first year, he is nevertheless the target of some bullying due to his constant illnesses and small stature. This is probably about when he develops an attitude, and self-deprecation mixed with the deprecation of others helps Merriweather to gather a small cadre of friends.

The summer after his second year (1884) he almost dies of the laughing plague. Surprising himself the most, perhaps, Merriweather doesn't die. Rufina's sister and brother-in-law do, though, and somehow the Mulcibers end up with custody of Rufus. Used to being the only boy-child in the house, Merriweather perhaps becomes jealous of the child - especially as Rufus comes to resemble him more in the coming years.

Merriweather picks up Arithmancy and Divination as his electives, but shows little talent for either. He isn't named Prefect. After taking his OWLs in 1887, Merriweather again surprises himself by accomplishing really decent scores. He continues with DADA, Potions, Herbology, Charms, History of Magic, and Transfiguration, afraid that he will end up unable to do whatever career he wants if he drops too many classes.

Instead what this means is that Merriweather is leaving his sixth year with no direction in terms of a career he does want. Shit.

* Merry has basically been sickly his whole life.
* Occasionally sharp-witted/asshole.

This was easily the most awesome thing Ernest had ever done, and Merry hid a grin behind his hand. Taunting Kris Lestrange? In public? Awesome as fuck, thank you very much. It was probably going to get him pushed down some stairs later, but it was also distinctly worth it.
