Did you know?
The Language of the Flowers was a popular method to express feelings where words might be improper, but did you know other means of doing so? Some ladies used their parasols, as well as their fans, gloves, and hankies to flirt with a gentleman (or alternatively, tell them to shove it!). — Bree ( Submit your own)

This boy, then. He wasn't new. Wasn't one of the worst people in the common room, those rotten rich boys - like Mr. Jailkeeper - who could not fathom a world beyond their own farts. Was a good working class lad, so he'd heard. Had a bit of a weird looking face, and a bit of a weird thing for preaching. Still.Aubrey Davis in The Under-Sofa

Odette Ravenhurst

Full Name: Odette Helewise Ravenhurst

Nickname(s): Detta

Birthdate: May 06, 1866

Age: 21

Occupation: Owl Emporium Employee; Owl Breeder

Blood Status: Halfblood

Residence: Hogsmeade, Scotland

Hogwarts House: Hufflepuff Dropout ('79)

Wand: Rowan, 9 inches, Unicorn hair, Whippy

Gerald Ravenhurst, Father [1842-1885]
Lily Ravenhurst (née -----), Mother [1842-1870]
Wilbur Ravenhurst, Brother [1870]

During the early years of her life, Odette lodged with members of her extended family comprised of the muggle relatives of Odette's muggleborn father. After going to live in Hogsmeade, she lost contact with many of them and has little idea where to find them.

Pixie, Tawny Owl
Piper, Barn Owl
Pinky, Snowy Owl
Prissy. Eastern Screech Owl
Percy, Great Horned Owl
Petunia, Eagle Owl

Odette has other owls, most of whom were rescues, but she plays favoritism.
Odette has always been characterized by those around her by one single trait: her height. Standing at a very short four feet, six and a half inches tall, Odette's height has arguably shaped her existence. Such a smart stature means she's frequently been treated like a child, and at times she's had to find ways to compensate for her lack of inches. It has also been a source of great fear throughout her adolescence and early adult life, as she knows child-bearing would be dangerous — it's what killed her mother, and her mother was taller than she!

Apart from her height, Odette possesses long, wavy brown hair and clear blue eyes. Her complexion, while fair, easily burns and is susceptible to scarring when scratched or otherwise hurt. She wears clothes which are undamaged at best; the finest fabrics are far out of her reach, and she's forced to mend any damages to the few outfits she owns. Her voice is high-pitched and as equally childlike as her figure. She is left-handed.

Notable elements of her personality:

Easily Manipulated | While many who hold traditional values would regard her dominant traits — her friendly, charitable, self-sacrificing — as the ideal traits of a young woman, they have likely done more to harm her than help her throughout life. Anyone wishing to get anything from her can get do so if they try hard enough, the only exception being sex due to both fear of being ostracized from society and pregnancy.
☛ While largely uneducated in most areas of magic, Odette has picked up worn spell books and various tricks from friends and neighbors to help run her life as efficiently as possible throughout her life. She's well-adept at household charms, though could not defend herself if her life depended on it.
1866 | Odette is born the first child to Gerald and Lily Ravenhurst, marking the beginning of their small family in Scotland. Odette's father, a hard-working laborer, rarely is seen around the home due to the long working hours he's forced to put in while Odette's mother handles the child at home until she's able to return to work. The family, though undoubtedly poor, is a happy and loving one.

1870 | What's expected to be a happy days turns tragic as Odette's mother dies from hemorrhage following the birth of Wilbur, the second Ravenhurst child. While the mourning Gerald cherishes his newborn son, the baby's survival presents another issue: one less family member to bring in income and one more mouth to feed. The family suffers greatly and is forced to cram into a small, one-room shack with various members of extended family, mostly comprised of muggles clueless about the magical world.

1872 | Odette's first sign of magic makes its appearance, shocking everyone in the small household except her father. While her father makes sure she knows what's going on, he also makes it clear that she is not to speak about the occurrences with anyone except him.

1874 | Odette finally learns what killed her mother years before: her size. Thus begins the lifelong fear of remaining short — and after that fear comes true, having children and meeting the same fate of her mother.

1877 | Odette is granted the opportunity to go off to Hogwarts for one year with the hope that she can survive off an academic scholarship. She, like both her mother and father, is sorted into Hufflepuff where she finds a happy home. She stands out against the rest of the first years, barely grazing four feet tall at age eleven. Later in the year, her father takes a job opportunity in Hogsmeade that allows the small family to live in their own place among wizardkind!

1879 | The end of her second year brings bad news: her grades had dropped low enough to where the school was unwilling to fund her education any longer. With any dreams of a prosperous career crushed and without any money at home, she leaves school. She finds a job as a kitchen maid in one of Hogsmeade's pubs.

1881 | Wilbur goes off to Hogwarts and is sorted into -----. He doesn't even come close to doing as well as his older sister in his classes, much in part due to his lacking knowledge in written English.

1882 | Wilbur too leaves Hogwarts with one year of magical education under his belt.

1883 | Odette turns seventeen-years-old, allowing her to use magic freely outside of Hogwarts. The freedom is exhilarating, but her lacking skill in magic and basic wand work is not. Some of her neighbors sell her cheap spell books to study, but she finds that only some of them are real spells.

1884 | The Hogsmeade Laughing Plague leaves her father ill. While he does recover from the symptoms of the illness, he's permanently weakened as is less and less capable of doing labor as time goes on.

1885 | Her father's deteriorating health finally catches up to him when he dies of pneumonia early in the year. With their father dead and with little to hold them together, brother and sister part ways to find their own paths. Odette never really learns what becomes of her brother, the last knowledge of him coming from a neighbor who heard he took a job in a wealthy household. Not wanting to be forced into the life of domestic service, she gathers a few other female roommate to share the rent of her home with.

1886 | After a magical rainstorm injures a small family of owls, Odette finds her family's small shack turned into a tiny owl sanctuary. She rescues more and more owls, relying on donations and her own thriftiness to gather food for them. She's taken under the wing of a local owl breeder and expert who hears of her work, allowing her to learn more about the needs of the birds. She eventually accumulates far too many owls that she can afford and releases many of the ones who had long recovered from their illnesses.

1887 | Without Odette's advancing knowledge on owl care, she goes off to work for the Owl Emporium in Hogsmeade while continuing to care for and breed her own bunch back at her home.
☛ Odette was sorted into Hufflepuff, but dropped out after her second year due to financial strains.

☛ She was orphaned after her father died in 1885.

☛ She loves owls and has, like, three on her at all times.
☛ Her brother works in domestic service.

☛ Her mother died of hemorrhage in the aftermath of her brother's birth.
☛ If she's fully human or not (which she is). There's likely been speculation over whether she's half-goblin, but she's likely too oblivious to address it.

Plot Preferences:
❧ I value communication over anything else, as a lack of communication breeds (unwanted) tension! As such, if you wish for a certain outcome you can't reach without me or my character cooperating, please let me know! I can generally find ways for my characters to reach certain points while keeping true to their personalities.

❧ I prefer faster-paced threads, as some of my character's plot-lines move quickly enough to where the outcome may make no difference if it takes too long. I tend to respond quickly; if you feel I'm taking too long, don't hesitate to nudge me!

❧ I generally prefer organic development to pre-plotting, except, of course, in the case of plottable adoptables and other plots that have a needed outcome.

❧ My post length varies based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: length of post I'm given to work with, muse for the character, and plot-importance.

❧ Concerning mature threads, I'm perfectly alright with swearing and violence, though will write smut only if it's required to further character or plot development.

❧ I'm perfectly fine with basic god-modding actions (i.e. your character leading mine somewhere, touches, etc.), but prefer control in most other situations. If you have a question, just ask! I won't bite ;)

❧ Unless important for plot development, I generally prefer not to be in basic meet-and-greet threads. If conversation between characters turn idle, I'm prone to creating sinkholes. Seriously.
