    Elmer R. Macmillan

In the early autumn, Elmer and his best friend and co-business partner, His Majesty Merlin Huxley, embark to Peru. They are convinced that there is some secret Shakespearean manuscript there that proves that he was a wizard. Unsurprisingly, they find no such thing, but they still work with antiques and old texts.

Elmer and Merl return from Peru. He's been gone for so long that he's lost his position in the Ministry, not that he really cares. It occurs to him that he never really wanted a Ministry career, but he got himself one because he was a third son and he didn't want to disappoint his parents. Now that he's older, he figures that he could do what he likes. He doesn't need to live a wealthy lifestyle. After all, all of his favourite poets died destitute! He also has two older brothers to continue the family legacy.

His main source of income becomes his shop (which isn't booming with business) and his side-jobs involving antiques. He also uses the fact that he used to be a lawyer for the Ministry to help people with their legal issues for some extra sickles.

He reconnects with a woman he found attractive and who is now married, Mrs. November Malfoy. He doesn't shy away from morbidly flirting with her and sending her letters.

In the summer, his parents purchase the old home of a recently decease aunt of his, in Wellingtonshire. In early August, Mrs. Malfoy's brother, Reuben Crouch, who also happened to be romantically involved with Elmer's cousin, comes to visit on a flying carpet. Elmer had taken his cousin's (Miss Ellory Pendergast's) old room, so things get awkward and violent.
